1. Who we are
MockQ (“we,” “us”) is a technology company that provides AI-powered practice for technical interviews, including live voice interviews, a code editor that runs your code, optional proctoring, and AI-generated feedback.
This policy explains what personal data we collect when you visit our website or use MockQ (the “Service”), how we use and share it, how long we keep it, and the rights you have. We are the controller of the personal data described in this policy. MockQ is a practice tool used by individuals; it is not used by employers to make hiring decisions about you.
2. Personal data we collect
Depending on how you use MockQ, we collect:
- Account data: your name, email address, username, authentication information (passwords are stored only in hashed form), and profile details you choose to add, including a resume if you upload one, the details on your Resume page, and your answers to the welcome questions (what you’re preparing for and what you want to work on).
- Interview data: your voice while you speak during an interview, the resulting transcript of you and the AI interviewer, code you write or submit, code execution results, and other content you provide.
- Session and evaluation data: the selected problem and language, session time and duration, minutes used, and AI-generated hints, feedback, scores, and scorecards.
- Proctoring data (optional, off by default): only if you turn on proctoring in the consent screen before your interview. Your camera and screen are then shared with our proctoring provider for the session, which records activity events (such as switching tabs, no face visible, or more than one person in view) and keeps camera and screen captures as evidence when such an event is detected. Proctoring simulates a monitored interview; it detects whether a face is present but does not identify you by your face. No audio is recorded for proctoring. Proctoring results are used to check that an interview was completed fairly, are taken into account in your overall result, and decide how much the interview counts toward your leaderboard rating. They are not shown on your scorecard and are available on request. If you leave proctoring off, your camera is not used and your screen is not captured.
- Billing data: purchase, credit, and subscription records, billing country, and payment status. Card details are collected directly by our payment processor; we never see or store your full card number and receive only limited details such as card brand and last four digits.
- Usage and device data: IP address and approximate location derived from it, browser and device type, pages and features used, timestamps, and log data needed to operate, troubleshoot, and secure the Service.
- Communications: messages you send us, such as support or privacy requests.
We do not ask for, and you should not provide, sensitive information such as health data, government identifiers, passwords, API keys, or confidential information belonging to others during an interview.
3. How we use personal data
We use personal data to:
- Create, authenticate, and secure your account.
- Run mock interviews: hear and respond to you, transcribe the conversation, run your code, and provide optional proctoring.
- Generate AI hints, feedback, scores, and scorecards, and show your history and progress.
- Administer minute credits, purchases, subscriptions, invoices, and customer support.
- Send service messages such as receipts, security notices, and changes to our terms or this policy.
- Maintain reliability, prevent fraud and abuse (including malicious code), investigate security incidents, and enforce our Terms of Service.
- Understand and improve MockQ using aggregated or de-identified usage information.
- Comply with legal, tax, and accounting obligations.
We do not sell your personal data, share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, or use your interview content to train general-purpose AI models.
4. Legal bases for processing
Where the EU or UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or similar laws apply, we rely on the following legal bases:
- Contract: to provide the Service you request, including your account, interviews, feedback, and purchases.
- Consent: to record and transcribe your voice, to process interview content with AI services, and for optional proctoring. You can withdraw consent at any time; withdrawal does not affect processing that already took place, but MockQ cannot run interviews without voice and AI processing.
- Legitimate interests: to secure the Service, prevent abuse, and improve MockQ, where those interests are not overridden by your rights.
- Legal obligation: to keep financial records and respond to lawful requests.
In Canada, we rely on your consent, which may be express or implied depending on the sensitivity of the information, as permitted by applicable privacy law.
5. Automated processing and AI
MockQ uses AI services to conduct interviews and produce feedback and scores. These outputs are automated, may be inaccurate or incomplete, and are for practice only. They do not produce legal or similarly significant effects on you: we do not make employment decisions, and we do not share your results with employers. If you believe an evaluation is wrong, contact us at support@mockq.io and a person will review it.
When you upload a resume, we send it to an AI service to read it into your Resume page. What it fills in is not saved until you save it.
We require the AI service providers we use not to use your interview content to train their own models. Some providers may keep inputs and outputs for a limited period for abuse monitoring before deleting them.
6. Data retention
We keep personal data only as long as needed for the purposes in this policy:
- Voice audio: processed in real time to run the interview and not stored after the interview ends.
- Transcripts and code: 12 months after the interview, or until you delete your account if that is sooner.
- Scores and evaluations: while your account is active.
- Proctoring data: camera and screen captures are deleted automatically by our proctoring provider within 6 months.
- Account data: while your account is active.
- Billing records: as long as tax and accounting laws require (generally six years in Canada).
- Security records: sign-ins and changes to your account, with the IP address and browser, kept for 24 months to protect your account and the Service, including after you delete your account.
- System logs: routine error and diagnostic records, which never contain interview content, deleted within 120 days, including after you delete your account.
- Records of consents and privacy requests: kept without interview content while your account is active and for 24 months after you delete it, to show we handled your data lawfully.
When you delete your account, everything else is deleted at once, except for two limited records. If you sign up again with the same email address within 12 months, your remaining free minutes and any account restrictions carry over, so we keep a scrambled form of your address for that long. If you paid in the last 180 days, we keep a record of your purchases and interview times, without transcripts or code, for 180 days after your last payment so we can respond to a payment dispute.
Deleted data may remain in backups for up to 7 days before it is overwritten.
7. Data sharing and disclosure
We share personal data only as described below:
- Service providers (subprocessors): companies that process data on our behalf to provide hosting, database and storage, authentication, real-time audio streaming, speech recognition and synthesis, AI language processing, code execution, optional proctoring, payment processing, email delivery, and error monitoring. We choose providers whose terms limit how they handle the data they process for us, and we are putting written data processing agreements in place with each of them. A list of our current subprocessors is available on request at support@mockq.io.
- Other MockQ users: the leaderboard, which only signed-in users can see, shows your username, rating, number of interviews, average score and problems solved, never your name or email. You are on it by default and can switch it off on the Leaderboard page at any time.
- Professional advisors: such as lawyers, accountants, and auditors, under duties of confidentiality.
- Legal and safety: when required by law or legal process, or when reasonably necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of MockQ, our users, or others, including investigating abuse.
- Business transfers: in connection with a merger, financing, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case the recipient must continue to protect your data as described in this policy.
- With your direction: when you ask us to share information.
8. International data transfers
MockQ is based in Canada. Our service providers may store or process personal data in the United States and other countries whose data protection laws may differ from those where you live, and where it may be accessible to courts and authorities under local law. Where transfers from the EEA, UK, or Switzerland require it, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission (and the UK equivalent) or another lawful transfer mechanism.
9. Your data protection rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you and receive a copy, including in a portable, machine-readable format.
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Delete your personal data and account.
- Restrict or object to certain processing, including processing based on legitimate interests.
- Withdraw consent at any time.
- Know what categories of personal data we collect, use, and disclose, and opt out of any sale or sharing (we do not sell or share personal data).
- Not be discriminated against for exercising your rights.
You can download a copy of your data and delete your account yourself, in Profile under Account, and turn proctored interviews on or off on the Practice page. For anything else, email support@mockq.io from the address on your account. We may need to verify your identity, and an authorized agent may submit a request on your behalf where the law allows. We will respond within 30 days, or sooner if your law requires, and we do not charge for requests. If we decline a request, we will explain why and how you can appeal.
11. Security
We use appropriate technical and organizational measures designed to protect personal data against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, or alteration, including encryption in transit and at rest, access controls that limit each user to their own data, isolated sandboxes for running code, and restricted staff access. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. If a breach affects your personal data and creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify you and the relevant regulators as required by law.
13. Children’s privacy
MockQ is not directed at anyone under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact support@mockq.io and we will delete it.
14. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the revised version here with a new “Effective date.” If a change materially affects how we use your personal data, we will notify you by email or in the Service and, where required, ask for your consent again.
